Now, no one I know uses either Y!, WLM is gone (those two were basically dominant before 2012 among my friends who used IM/Messaging Services), and a vast majority of those abandoned users didn't move to Skype, anyways (which is why Microsoft was so desperate to try to bake it into the Windows OS, but that didn't work as well). It was a huge step back when Microsoft decided to do that, and replace it with Skype. Those interoperability deals basically were an innovation in the industry that made it less cumbersome to communicate with people who used different devices (where your service may not have been supported) or services (because they had a Y! Account instead of a Microsoft Account). That's why 3rd party clients like BeejiveIM were popular, but completely nosedived once this happened. Frankly, they were stronger when they were together, and nosedived in record time the minute that ended. They had a deal for interoperability with Windows Live Messenger and when that deal was discontinued (and Microsoft got rid of Live Messenger) suddenly half of your Y! or WLM contact list disappeared - those people were on the other network and you could only communicate with them thanks to the interoperability between the two networks. I think the thing that hurts Yahoo! Messenger the most was Microsoft. It reminds me of the Messages app on OS X where you just have Search and a list of conversations on the right, and the conversation selected on the left.
